Fulton County Police Partners with Federal DEA to kick off Prescription Drug Take Back

The Fulton County Police Department has partnered with the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and other government, community, public health and law enforcement partners to announce a nationwide prescription drug “Take-Back” initiative. The initiative seeks to prevent increased pill abuse and theft.

Last September, Americans turned in 242,000 pounds - 121 tons - of prescription drugs at nearly 4,100 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement partners, including the Fulton County Police Department.

The Fulton County Police Department will be collecting potentially dangerous expired, unused,

and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction on Saturday, October 29, 2011 from

10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WEST SIDE: Store clerk shot in Atlanta food mart robbery

ATLANTA -- Atlanta police are searching for three men after a store clerk was shot during a robbery on the city's northwest side.

Atlanta Police Capt. Van Hobbs said a man came into a food mart on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard shortly before 4 a.m. Thursday and asked the store clerk to make fresh coffee.

Police said that when the clerk left the secure area of the store, three masked men came in and forced the clerk into the office, where they stole an undetermined amount of cash.

Hobbs said the clerk was shot in the leg as the suspects were leaving the store.

He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

DeKalb, Fulton receive grants to fight sexual abuse

ATLANTA -- DeKalb and Fulton counties have been awarded grants for use by law enforcement agencies to combat child sexual abuse and exploitation.

The grants awarded Tuesday are administrated by the U.S. Department of Justice and Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

Federal officials say DeKalb County will receive $496,793 and the Fulton County District Attorney's Office will receive $352,803. They say Atlanta continues to have a reputation as a center of child prostitution.

Twenty grants totaling $9.2 million are being awarded to agencies across the country.

WEST SIDE: Man found shot to death

ATLANTA -- Police are investigating a fatal shooting in a northwest Atlanta neighborhood.

Dispatchers say the unidentified victim was killed about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

They say the man was shot multiple times and the body was found in a gravel alleyway.

Police say they are looking for anyone who might have witnessed the shooting.

Feds crack down on prescription drug trafficking

ATLANTA -- A federal grand jury in Atlanta has charged a total of 13 defendants from two states with illegally trafficking in oxycodone and other prescription drugs.

The two cases arise out of intensified efforts to address Georgia's growing problem with prescription drug abuse.

"Prescription drug abuse is our nation's fastest-growing segment of illegal drug use, causing significantly more overdose deaths than cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin combined," said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

In the first incident, 11 Georgia residents were charged with conspiring to forge oxycodone prescriptions and sell the illegally obtained tablets.
