Suzi Awards honor best local theater productions

ATLANTA -- Many of metro Atlanta's most talented performers, directors and theater crew members descended on DeKalb County Monday night for the 2013 Suzi Bass Awards.

Every year, the Suzis honor the best theater productions in the area. Awards are given in two areas -- plays and musicals.

The Aurora Theatre's staging of Les Misérables was one of this year's big winners. It took home five Suzi Awards, including Outstanding Musical Production, Outstanding Director of a Musical and Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical.

DECATUR, Ga. -- The 2013 Suzi Bass Awards ceremony will be held Monday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Porter Sanford Performing Arts Center in DeKalb County.

This year's Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Del Hamilton and Faye Allen, founders of 7 Stages Theatre. The duo started the Little Five Point theater company in 1979. Today, it's one of metro Atlanta's most popular and respected theaters.

The winner of this year's Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award for an outstanding play penned by a local writer will also be revealed at Monday's ceremony.

Kasim Reed seeks second term in Tuesday's election

ATLANTA -- Voters in Atlanta head to the polls Tuesday to decide whether to re-elect Mayor Kasim Reed.

Reed has three challengers, although his opponents have little name recognition and have not reported raising any money.

Reed is known for his strong support of President Barack Obama and his working relationship with Republican Gov. Nathan Deal on issues such as economic development.

Reed hasn't been immune to criticism. Open government advocates have challenged Reed over a plan to use public financing to help support a new Atlanta Falcons stadium, and a group of street vendors have expressed their unhappiness since the city took steps to curtail the selling of goods on public streets.

(WXIA) -- Forbes has unveiled its 2013 list of America's richest people.

Bill Gates topped the list for the 20th year in a row, with a net worth of $72 billion. He also reclaimed the title of richest person in the world from Mexican investor Carlos Slim. Warren Buffett placed second with $58.5 billion.

America's richest range in age from 29 (Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, worth $5.2 billion) to 98 (philanthropist David Rockefeller, Sr., worth $2.8 billion). The stakes were so high this year that 61 U.S. billionaires didn't make the cut, according to Forbes.

Seven Georgians are on this year's list. Anne Cox Chambers, 93, is No. 29 with a net worth of $13.5 billion; she is the daughter of Cox Enterprises founder James M. Cox. Her nephew Jim Kennedy, 65, is chairman of the company and is No. 61 on the list with a net worth of $6.7 billion.

Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy, 92, is No. 68 with a net worth of $6 billion.

ATLANTA -- The nominees for the 2012-13 Suzi Bass Awards were announced Monday.

This year's Suzi Nomination Party was held at 7 Stages Theatre in Little Five Points and was hosted by past Suzi winners Ingrid Cole and Glenn Rainey.

The Suzi Awards are named for Suzi Bass, a well-loved Atlanta actress who died of cancer in 2002. Every year, they honor some of the best theater productions in metro Atlanta.
