Sad day for Atlanta couponers: The end of Kroger double coupons

ATLANTA -- The wave of couponers' cries heard in the Midwest and Texas has finally hit the Southeast!

For years, we have enjoyed the everyday doubling of coupons $0.50 and less. We got FREE items because of this great policy and it made handling an almost impossible budget easier for us couponers and savvy shoppers.

While I am not saying that this will hurt us (I will be posting some other things Kroger is doing), it does have me wondering -- in this competitive Atlanta market, where we use more coupons per capita then ANYWHERE in the US -- how will this fare? Will Publix jump on the bandwagon?

The end of double coupons becomes effective September 21, 2013. For this couponer, I will be having to double check my shopping list with this new rule. It's not fun, but a lot of new things are coming from Kroger, and I think this is why the program of double couponing is ending.

ATLANTA -- MODA Floors & Interiors, located in Atlanta's West Midtown Design District, will open a 5100-square-foot retail-focused store in Town Brookhaven later this year. The company plans to add four new employees. MODA sells materials and provides installation services for hardwoods, tile and stone, carpet, luxury vinyl, laminate, area rugs and window coverings.

MODA Floors & Interiors' new store will be located in a shopping center in the Brookhaven area, providing easier access for the retail market. As a Shaw Design Center, the showroom will integrate the latest media technology to enhance the shopping and buying experience. Design consultants will be available at both stores to assist consumers in making design decisions for their homes.

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Cooperative Extension will celebrate the end of the second season of the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market on Wednesday, September 12th at the Shrine of the Black Madonna located at 946 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd., SW, Atlanta, GA 30310 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am.  

Fulton County Cooperative Extension, in an effort to address health disparities, began the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market Program in 2011.  Fulton County residents living in “food deserts." areas with limited access to mainstream grocery stores, are able to get fresh vegetables and nutrition education from the Fulton Fresh mobile units.

In response to public demand, the program added an additional mobile unit to reach more communities.  The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market trucks delivered an estimated 8 tons of fresh produce to more than 1,800 residents living in 12 areas identified as food deserts.   In 2011, Fulton Fresh provided

Eat out, raise money, help kids

ATLANTA -- You can do your part this week to curb Georgia's high school dropout rate. All you need to do is eat at one of your favorite restaurants.

On Thursday, Aug. 23, proceeds from restaurants across the state will be donated to Communities in Schools of Georgia, an organization that encourages young people to complete their education and succeed in life.

The sixth annual Dine Out for Kids event hopes to exceed last year's total of $30,000 for children in the state.

Communities in Schools, which has chapters across the country, provides mentoring and after-school services, including parent education, literacy programs and youth leadership opportunities.

Walmart layaway is back, better this year

Walmart layaway is back, better this year

ATLANTA -- The Walmart layaway program will return just in time for Christmas, the company announced Monday.

This year's layaway will have plenty of new features, including more eligible items and a $15 Walmart gift card for those who pay for their entire layaway purchase.

Layaway begins on Sept. 16. Customers who like their local Walmart stores on Facebook beginning Aug. 28 will be able to start their layaway early, on Sept. 14.

Georgia resumes annual Back-to-School tax free holiday

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia is offering parents a tax holiday on back-to-school goods for the first time since 2009.

The state will temporarily suspend its collection of the sales tax on Aug. 10-11 for general school supplies, some clothing and computers and computer accessories.

ATLANTA -- Atlantic Station will soon be home to the first Athleta store in Georgia.

Athleta, which is owned by GAP, offers workout clothing for all types of active women. The Atlantic Station location is scheduled to open in the fall.

A new restaurant will also soon make its way to the mixed-use community on Atlanta's west side.

Shaun Doty, of YEAH! Burger fame, plans to open a fast-casual, as-yet-unnamed chicken restaurant by the end of the year. It will feature wood-grilled chicken, fresh vegetables and a great kids' menu, according to a statement released Monday by Atlantic Station.
